Columbus voters change how City Council is elected

Voters passed Issues 8 and 9 on Tuesday, so residents will vote only for the council member from their own district instead of an all at-large field. Issue 9 also adds four citywide seats, two in 2027 and two in 2029, for 13 members by 2030, and creates a citizen commission to redraw district maps by the 2029 election.

Your council ballot and your district lines will both change, and Council President Pro Tem Rob Dorans says the public will help with the maps once a plan comes out in the coming months.

News

  1. Democrats win governor and Senate races and end the GOP House supermajority

Amy Acton beat Vivek Ramaswamy for governor, and Sherrod Brown unseated Jon Husted by about 4.9 points in unofficial returns. Democrats flipped nine Ohio House seats, so Republicans keep both chambers but lack the House votes to override a veto on their own. NBC4

  2. Sunbury caps data centers after Amazon proposal

About 79% of Sunbury voters backed a charter amendment that bars data centers with demand above 25 megawatts, after Amazon proposed a $2 billion project there. Five central Ohio communities either banned data centers or rejected proposals on Tuesday. 10TV

  3. Grove City High School may need a second vote

South-Western voters approved a $220 million bond to replace Grove City and Westland high schools. Grove City voters also passed Issue 28, which requires a public vote on new projects of 50 acres or more, and the mayor says the 52-acre school site falls under it. 10TV

  4. Pickerington levy fails by fewer than 300 votes

The 0.75% school income tax lost by less than one percent, six months after voters rejected a larger one. The superintendent says more extracurricular cuts will be announced this week, and classrooms will not change this school year. 10TV

  5. Former officer gets community control in Donovan Lewis death

A judge on Wednesday sentenced Ricky Anderson to three years of community control and court costs after his guilty plea to reckless homicide. Anderson shot Lewis, 20, in his Hilltop apartment in 2022. ABC6

  6. Free drop-offs open for yard signs and pumpkins

Columbus takes both at 2100 Alum Creek Dr. and 1550 Georgesville Rd., Tuesday through Saturday from 9 to 5, until November 29. Paper signs can go in blue bins, but plastic signs and metal wires go to those centers. ABC6
